Lyrica precautions and warnings
Most of the medications need to be administered after taking into consideration their side effects. This is the reason why many packs of drugs carry labels mentioning about the precautions to be taken care of while using those drugs. Invariably, the manufacturers of these drugs display warnings too on the pack of the medicines and/or on the container of the medicines. This is more applicable in the case of Lyrica (pregabalin), as it is used for treating the pain caused due to problems in the central nervous system. This drug is used on diabetic patients especially, for relieving neuropathic pain. Therefore, the usage becomes critical in this case.
At the outset, Lyrica can cause side effects. Therefore, before commencing this medication, you should discuss with your doctor on the risks and benefits of using Lyrica. At least 1% of the population taking this medication report side effects. These side effects include dizziness, sleepiness, loss of memory, headache, back pain, lack of energy, constipation, vomiting, muscle weakness and weight gain. However, these side effects are manageable. When you experience severe or bothering side effects, you should consult your physician or pharmacist, who will guide you on managing these problems. There are also some side effects which do not occur frequently, but it is to be borne in mind that they can lead to serious problems if you leave them unattended. Proper medical attention for relieving these side effects is therefore very necessary.
You should consult your physician if you are on Lyrica and have symptoms such as blurred vision, confusion, lack of co-ordination, increased blood pressure, palpitations, severe tiredness, unexplained muscle pain and vision changes. Some patients may experience chest pain, eye pain, hallucinations and tenderness or weakness of muscles together with fever. They also may feel unwell. People having the symptoms of allergic reactions such as shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, hives or swelling of eyes should stop taking Lyrica and seek medical attention immediately. The above list of side effects is not exhaustive. Some patients may experience some other side effects too. You should therefore consult your doctor in case you experience any bothering side effect while you are on Lyrica.
As a thumb rule, you should talk to your physician before commencing your medication with Lyrica. You should inform him/her of your medical conditions and allergies you have. If you are a pregnant woman or a nursing woman, inform your physician about your pregnancy or breastfeeding as the case may be. You should provide your physician all the important facts about your health, so that the physician will be able to decide on the course of medication with Lyrica. However, do not ride or drive or operate machinery if you have drowsiness due to use of Lyrica.
As precautions and warnings are associated with use of Lyrica, withdrawal of Lyrica also have them. If you stop Lyrica abruptly, you may develop withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms include troubled sleep, headache, diarrhea and nausea. Therefore, you can stop this medication only after consulting your physician. If you have heart ailments, you should know from your doctor as to how medication with Lyrica can affect your health condition. Based on your medical condition the physician will decide the dosage of Lyrica and arrange for monitoring of your condition further. If you have kidney problems, the dosage may be lower as kidneys eliminate pregabalin from the body. Medication with Lyrica can reduce male fertility. This medication can cause skin ulcers or sores. Pregabalin can cause vision disturbances. It may also cause weight gain and swelling at the extremities. Children, adolescents and old persons can be given Lyrica only after consulting a physician.
